Join the Kaeb Sales team! We are looking for a dependable, electrically inclined Automation Intern for Summer 2027 who is eager to learn and gain hands-on experience with dairy automation systems.
As an Automation Intern, you will work alongside experienced technicians to learn how to build, wire, install, troubleshoot, maintain, and repair automated dairy equipment and control systems. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in electrical systems, automation, or agricultural technology to develop technical skills while helping dairy producers keep their operations running smoothly.
Responsibilities
- Assist with building, wiring, modifying, and installing custom control systems.
- Help install, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair dairy automation equipment.
- Learn to identify and resolve electrical and mechanical issues with guidance from experienced technicians.
- Gain exposure to PLCs, HMIs, variable frequency drives (VFDs), sensors, motor controls, and other electrical components.
- Assist with reading and interpreting electrical prints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Help diagnose equipment problems and identify potential solutions.
- Work alongside experienced technicians on projects and service calls at customer locations.
- Follow electrical safety procedures and company policies when working with tools, equipment, and control systems.
- Maintain a clean and organized work environment.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Interest in electrical systems, automation, electronics, or a related technical field.
- Basic understanding of electrical systems or relevant technical coursework preferred.
- Willingness to learn about PLC programming, electrical controls, and automated equipment.

In this role, you will build, wire, install, troubleshoot, and maintain control systems and automated equipment used in the dairy industry. The ideal candidate has a strong electrical background, enjoys solving problems, and can adapt to the changing needs of our customers.
Responsibilities
- Build, wire, install, and support custom control systems for agricultural and dairy applications.
- Troubleshoot, modify, and repair electrical control systems, automated equipment, and related mechanical components.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical systems and equipment.
- Read and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical prints.
- Program and modify PLCs, HMIs, and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
- Work with 3-phase 480VAC systems, 24VDC and 120VAC control systems, motor control circuits, and analog sensors.
- Use digital multimeters and other tools to diagnose electrical issues and verify system performance.
- Travel to customer sites to install, troubleshoot, and service equipment.
- Follow safety procedures and company policies while maintaining a positive working relationship with coworkers and customers.
- Participate in scheduled on-call rotations and work overtime, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Experience reading, understanding, and modifying PLC ladder logic, preferably with AutomationDirect platforms, including Productivity Series, CLICK, and DirectLOGIC.
- Basic understanding of HMI programming software, preferably C-more.
- Ability to wire, troubleshoot, understand, and repair electrical systems, including 3 phase 480VAC, 24VDC, and 120VAC control systems.
- Knowledge of motor control circuits, analog sensors, and variable frequency drives (VFDs), including wiring and programming.
- Ability to use a digital multimeter (DMM) and properly size wire and circuit protection.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical and pneumatic schematics and technical prints.
- Basic understanding of networking, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and serial communications.
- Experience using hand and power tools, with strong mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively on fast-paced, time sensitive projects.
- Willingness to work in hot, cold, wet, humid, and odorous agricultural environments.
- Willingness to work overtime, including weekends and holidays, and participate in an assigned on-call rotation.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Ability to reliably commute to Rensselaer, IN, or relocate before starting work.
Preferred Qualities
- Dairy industry experience or knowledge of dairy equipment and systems.
- Experience installing electrical conduit.
